The Denver Chalk Art Festival happens over a weekend in June each year in Larimer Square. In 2020, the LoDo art festival will happen June 6th and 7th. The festival is free and there is a photo contest for guests who want to capture the fun and compete for prizes. For a small donation, budding artists can get a chalk goody bag and color in the Kids Corner.
Each chalk illustration takes hours to create and is made up of outlines, base colors, and many layers of pastels. The festival is free and family friendly. Spectators are encouraged to admire the artists as they make their creations.
The Chalk Art Festival is inspired by artists of Renaissance Italy, who painted versions of the Madonna using chalk in the 16h century.
